"In order to raise awareness on the vulnerability of the turtles that live in our oceans, I have created a project on the crowdfunding website, Ulule, in which part proceeds will go towards the conservation of turtles in Trinidad and Tobago. "
Trinidad's shores, from the months of March to August, hosts the world's second largest population of leatherback turtles in the world and supports 80% of all leatherback sea turtle nesting within the Caribbean Sea Region.
To be honest, this blew my mind. I've seen these beautiful dinosaur like creatures come ashore to lay their eggs and I couldn't possibly fathom the thought of so many making this journey, all the way to Trinidad.
Turtle nesting season is a huge draw for locals and tourists alike, with many opportunities to see the turtles by staying in hotels in Grande Riviere, beach houses in Manzanilla or even camping on the beach on the North coast.
This turtle laying season, I wanted to help raise awareness on the vulnerability of the turtles that live in our oceans by creating a project, hosted by the crowdfunding website, Ulule.
The goal was to create a large scale woodcut print of a leatherback turtle, approximately 18 inches x 22 inches in height and width respectively and would be printed in black ink on a heavy textured board.
In order to help fund the creation of this woodcut, I also designed three different illustrated cards, featuring the different species of turtles that come to Trinidad (featured above), the Loggerhead, Hawksbill and of course the Green sea turtle.
So hop on over to Ulule's Carved & Printed: The Leatherback Turtle and let me know your thoughts. All donations and purchases would be greatly appreciated!
Frondly kisses,
Kat
